Quotes on various areas of life: happiness, success, family, technology in the classroom etc.... The students analyse, compare and contrast and make up their own. Each slide could be used as a starter to get your students thinking or to promote debate. They could end by producing an inspirational poster.

This is designed for EAL learners, but is useful as a prompt for debate in the mainstream classroom. The arguments and counter arguments are presented as exercises: match-up, replace the words and re-arrange the words. For early learners or for a mixed ability EAL class. The beginners can count and practise 'There is a __&' &';There are __ s'. Also present continuous tense &'What is she doing?&';etc. More advanced students can write about it in the past simple 'The school trip&'. How did they get there? This is a worksheet designed to get students thinking about transgender issues, triggered by JK Rowling and her tweet.

A set of cards requiring students to choose an option and justify it. Interesting mix of subjects: stop warfare or end disease? Give up crisps or chocolate? Be able to fly or communicate with animals...etc. They make great starter activities, practising 'I would rather...' and promoting creative thinking. The template is from eslprintables.

This is a desk-top mat for mainstream teachers with EAL students in the class. It's a short check list and then suggested activities for beginners through to advanced bilingual learners.

There are two sets of 11 boxes with a short paragraph. In pairs, the students discuss which of each pair is the best paragraph and why. They can 'mix and match' and create their own version. Next, they match the 11 paragraphs up to the pictures and put them in sequence to tell the basic storyline. I have taken the box layout and pictures from the internet.

The story is on the first slide, then there are various activities: visuals for Splat, or Q &A session; true or false/put the story in sequential order/guidelines for a hot seat and ideas on how to teach the story. My aim is to get the students to produce a recount.

Useful practice on describing a picture for the whole class and particularly for EAL students.

This is a 'Picture-based discussion&' topic. I put them in pairs and give them time to look at the sheet and make notes. One has to argue for the proposal and the other against. Great for starters in English or to develop more fully in PHSE.

This is a powerpoint of 52 slides. I uploaded it previously to test the waters as I was going to charge for it. From 23 views, it got 21 downloads! I was pleased. Since then, I have done nothing to make it sale-worthy, like checking image derivation and one or 2 layouts that are not really mine. However, I have faffed about with fancy borders and stuff to make it look presentable. Time to let this go live! The students decide which comment refers to which character. You could develop this by asking them to back up their decisions/give examples.

Eleven slides with maths activities related to 'Macbeth'. These are useful as starter or fun activities. I have varied the maths language; the maths activities are not difficult. The answers are provided and fly in.

This is a 12 slide power point, featuring ten famous refugees. Each slide comes with a short activity and some questions. It will suit year 7 and will serve as starter activities to accompany books about refugees, for example ‘Boy 87’. I have used Comic Sans and this font is not available for preview on here , surprisingly! It looks fine on download. I hope this will be useful.

This is a series of contrasting pictures, with questions, for making comparisons. Good 'brain gym&' activity.

A reading passage with true or false exercise and the students are asked to list all the words used instead of 'said.' If you use this worksheet you might like to do the E test with your class first. What it is is explained on the ws and there is a link to an article about it. (It's a personality test).

I ask my students to comment on each picture and make inferences. Then they have to prepare a 5 minute talk on whether they are for or against the death penalty and why. It's still a useful debate and can be linked to &'Of Mice and Men&'; and many other works they study.

This is a Venn diagram with a list of adjectives and phrases. Students decide which describe Curley's wife, which describe Crooks and which describe them both.

Here are some slides to complement the extract and exercises on boxing in the WJEC GCSE English and English Language Higher Level course book, pages 62, 63 and 64. There are anagrams of keywords to do with boxing, true and false on the passage on Spencer Oliver (p.62) match up the opposite words, the pros and cons of boxing and a look at keywords. Some of my group have got EAL and need this kind of differentiation.

This is a great nostalgic picture, with exercises to reinforce the present continuous and past simple tenses for EAL students. I play 'Splat!' and memory games with this kind of thing. I was kindly given permission to use the picture.
